One of USC coach Pete Carroll's favorite mantras is "Own the Rose Bowl."

Perhaps this year USC should look into taking out a lease in Miami.

The Trojans walked away from their last visit to South Beach with a national championship, derailing Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, 55-19.

The year is 2005, and Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and LenDale White are in the middle of one of USC's most prolific seasons in its history.

Cutting through defenses like a hot knife through butter, the team routinely scores 50 points - sometimes by the end of the third quarter - en route to an undefeated regular season and a birth in the BCS National Championship Game.

Right-handed wonder-boy Stephen Strasburg, who turned heads and earned national recognition as a sophomore pitcher for San Diego State last year, is continuing his wave of destruction, leaving opposing batters in his wake overseas. In his Olympic debut, Strasburg, who seems to make headlines every time he takes the mound, went seven hitless innings before the Dutch were able to breakup the no-hitter. It was the only hit Strasburg gave up as an extended rain delay resulted in the game being called in the eighth inning with team USA up 7-0. As the only collegiate player on a team made up of minor-league pros, Strasburg's performance is a bright spot on what has been a disappointing beginning to team USA's run at a medal, going 2-2 to begin pool play.

Ryan Lindley's beard was unkempt and patchy in several places.

The San Diego State football team's quarterback hadn't shaved in a few days and already feared the scolding his parents and head coach Chuck Long would give him for his surplus of facial hair.

But while Lindley admitted the rigors of a grueling summer training camp had prevented him from seeing his razor in the past week, the redshirt freshman may have just been trying out a new look.

The Cal Poly men's and women's cross country teams have been eagerly preparing this summer in anticipation of their first race this season.

The men's side figures to come back strong, having lost only two seniors from last season's squad that finished 11th at the NCAA Championships (outdoing a national ranking of 22 entering the race).

The Cal Poly football team will take a step up in competition this year when it plays two Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) teams. But don't expect the Mustangs to move up to the FBS permanently - at least not yet.

Responding to a recent comment Fresno State head coach Pat Hill made to the Fresno Bee suggesting Cal Poly would eventually belong to the Western Athletic Conference, Cal Poly athletic director Alison Cone said such a move is unlikely to take place in the near future.
